RESTORATION
Preserving history.
The Old Walnut Schoolhouse Partnership was created to rescue this piece of history from dilapidation. We aim to restore this property to a bastion of South Carolina culture. The Old Walnut Schoolhouse was opened for freed slaves after the Civil War. The one room building, one of 11 such school houses in the State of South Carolina from the late 1800’s, was still used for classes until the 1930’s when it was converted into a courthouse.
Despite being saved once from demolition in 1991, the building has been neglected and is in major need of renovation. This is where we step in.

The Old Walnut Hill Schoolhouse team has spent in excess of $500,000.00 to acquire the property from the previous owner. We will move the renovated schoolhouse closer to the road, landscape the property, and build ample parking for visitors behind the building. We are working with other neighboring property owners to provide a safe walking path along the side of Betsy Kerrison Parkway, so the community can have easy access to this cultural treasure.
